HELP US RAISE $ FOR DAMAGED STUDIO

All proceeds from the sale of this song go to benefit the Pigeon Club recording studio in Hoboken, NJ. The studio was flooded and damaged by the freak hurricane that tore up the East Coast earlier this fall.

I'm not exaggerating when I say, without the Pigeon Club, I wouldn't have a solo career. Check it out: most of my records would never have been made. The "15 Minute" EP and "Slow Down Kid" were recorded there and transformed me from a green wanker to a semi-respectable musician. My albums "Sunlight," "Woodstock' and "Little Daggers" were all mixed there. The songs "E.S.T." and "Resume" from "Looking" were recorded there. That's basically every album I have. And beyond all that, I still rehearse at the studio. It's my little creative bunker down the street from my house.

Then there's the song itself. After outlawing the use of all keyboards on our recent album "Aide Memoire," I found myself sitting at a piano one night last fall and the instrument felt new again and this song just poured out effortlessly. It was written for someone very close to me, someone who recently found himself/herself in a situation where there was no way around hurting someone he/she really cared about. I felt extreme empathy for both parties, but since so often all the attention goes to the victim, I found myself more taken with the hurter. It's just one of those sad facts of life--if you open yourself up to love, it can and will inevitably hurt you.

We recorded this song at the Pigeon Club and are now offering it to you at a price of just 49 cents, though we hope some of you will be willing/able to offer a little more.

lyrics

HARD TO HURT SOMEONE

When you know then you know
You just gotta let 'em go
Sometimes love ain’t enough
Takes so much to fill us up

It’s hard to hurt someone
It’s hard to hurt someone
You gotta let 'em down
You wanna let ‘em down easy

Wish you could steer free and clear
With no one knowing you were here
You're gonna heal
She’s gonna heal
You’ll both be laughing in a year

It’s hard to hurt someone
It’s hard to hurt someone
You gotta let 'em down
You wanna let ‘em down easy

I used to think nothing of a little blood

"Shake it off"
"What’s done is done"
"Let 'em say what they wanna"
All those clichés that people say
to make them feel better
Like "shake it off"
"What’s done is done"
"Let 'em say what they're gonna"
But they never say the simplest thing
hurting someone is the hardest thing

Cuz it feels wrong just moving on
It feels wrong just moving on
But there’s nothing wrong with moving on
There’s nothing wrong with moving on

It’s hard to hurt someone
Hard to hurt someone
But you're gonna let 'em down
You're gonna have to let 'em down

You’re gonna hurt someone…
It's really hard to hurt someone
You have to let em down
You gotta let 'em down easy
